Twenty-one media-savvy youngsters descended on Hungary’s dynamic capital city keen to see and experience as much as possible before heading home. Their itinerary included visits to the Korda Film Studios, the Hungarian state TV channel - Magyar Televízió where they engaged in a simulated TV production, a tour of a national newspaper HQ and the Hungarian National Gallery. In between, they were treated to a Danube river cruise and cultural folk evening as well as taking part in an Exit Room ‘locked-in’ challenge - a live escape experience designed to test their wits and get their pulses racing.

After regaining their freedom, the students set off to explore the city and take in as much of what it has to offer. Media students scanned the city for interesting locations for their travel photography assignment, while art and design students took to the Ludwig Museum of Contemporary Arts for ideas and inspiration.

Daniel, 18, and Ashleigh, 17, are studying for their Creative Media Production BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma courses at Orpington. Both would like to enter the exciting world of media and communications, film and television after further study at university or on a higher apprenticeship.

Daniel said: “The trip to Budapest has been brilliant. We took in so much in just four days and I found it totally exhilarating. In the UK we are so used to watching our own TV and media channels - BBC, ITV, Sky, and we tend to forget there is so much more out there in other parts of the world. It’s always interesting to see different styles, techniques and cultures and talk to really interesting people working in their media industries.”

Ashleigh said: “It’s been non-stop from the moment we boarded the plane for the outward journey to getting back to our seats for the return. We all loved the whole experience and I can’t wait to plan my next trip to another culturally rich and exciting city such as Budapest.

“I would love to make documentaries for a living and on my course I have been able to get involved in this kind of work. Hopefully I will get a job in the industry as a cinematographer. The visit to the film studios and TV channel gave me a real longing to get started. I haven’t yet decided whether to apply for university or for an appropriate apprenticeship as my next step.”

Media and film tutor, Joseph Higson said: “The trip was an enriching and fulfilling experience for media and art students alike, with positive feedback about the students from the organisations we visited. Budapest is a fantastic city, rich with some of the most interesting galleries, cultural institutions and artefacts in Europe. The students loved every minute.”
