In this programme, you will explore how the integration of sport, community and health come together and impact health, well-being and society. It's designed to enable you to explore contemporary issues in sports and critically reflect on key issues impacting the industry. You will learn valuable research, and practical and reflective skills that will enhance your employability prospects and progress your career. Whether you want to progress into teaching, work within the community or in other roles in the sport and health-related industry this programme will enable you to link theory gained in the classroom with the practical experience in your setting to develop the skills and knowledge you need.

  • What you will study

    You will study 6 modules across the year, at 20 credits each, for 120 credits at level 6. Please note modules are subject to minor revisions as the validation is finalised.

    Hands-On Learning: Strategies for Effective Coaching of Practical Activities This module will examine teaching pedagogy for various physical activities. You will be asked to critically reflect on current issues and how these relate to the practical delivery of teaching and coaching sessions accessible to all. You will explore how different activities relate to teaching and learning theory and explore issues around equal opportunities.

    Challenging Notions of Sport, Health and Body Cultures This module will ask you to engage in critical thinking on key contemporary issues relating to body cultures within the domain of sports, leisure and physical education. Through looking at historical views and sociological theory, you will explore current issues around how the body is perceived in sports and society.

    Individual Study: Part One This module will ask you to engage in critical reflection on your placement setting and identify key issues and topics that lead to a research proposal for further enquiry. You will explore research methods and ethical tensions that face the ‘practitioner researcher’.

    Promoting Wellness in the community via participation in physical activity This module will examine the techniques utilised by community health promoters to enhance health, physical activity, and overall well-being. You will be asked to design and deliver an activity programme in relation to national and local targets.

    Real-world engagement in Physical Activity and Sport Students will engage in lectures and workshops designed to manage expectations aligned with a desired career path in physical education and sports-related professions. You will reflect on your professional development and develop key career skills, such as interviewing techniques, forming and managing relationships and resumé. These will explore the holistic development of self (in preparedness for entry/re-entry into a desired career sector) that will enhance your career pathway and future employability.

    Individual Study: Part Two This module will allow you to build upon the research principles in part one and expand your project proposal. You will design, carry out and evaluate a relevant research project, gaining valuable research skills and an in-depth understanding of a chosen contemporary issue.

  • Entry Requirements

    Entry requirements:

    • GCSE Grades A*-C/9 – 4 in English or Level 2 equivalent.
    • Maths is not needed to study the top-up, but if you are looking at teacher training, you will also need GCSE A*-C/9 – 4 in Maths and science if you are looking at primary school.
    • 240 credits of advanced standing, usually from a Higher National Diploma in Sport or similar qualification such as a foundation degree, a higher education diploma or other accumulated credits at Levels 4 and 5 in a related area. This would be from courses such as sports and exercise science, coaching and physical activity. You must undertake an additional mapping activity to ensure that modules and credits studied from other routes will give you the knowledge and skills to succeed in Level 6 study.

    Additionally, you will need a work placement (paid or voluntary) of 10 hours a week in a relevant setting, such as a school or youth setting. This needs to allow you practical experience in delivering sports and coaching activities. You will need to submit a signed stakeholder agreement form as part of the application that confirms you have access to relevant hours and that your placement setting is aware that you are on a course of study.

  • Assessment

    For each 20-credit module, you will submit an assignment of 4000 words or equivalent. Most modules comprise two assessed components equal to 2000 words each. There are various assessment methods, including written essays, reports, digital presentations, practical skills and portfolio work. As you study each module, there will be smaller assessment activities to help you consolidate your learning and get ready for the final main assignment, which is submitted after the unit has been delivered.

  • Progression

    During this course, you will be able to develop a high level of skills and knowledge in physical education theory and practice so that you are prepared to enter various exciting careers.

    Whether you are considering becoming a primary or a secondary PE teacher or want to follow a career such as coaching or working in the leisure or health industry, this diverse course will develop your skills and knowledge, helping you reach your full potential. Once you have successfully completed this top-up year, you will graduate with a BSc (Hons) in Sports, Coaching and Physical Activity. With this, you can:

    • Enter into employment, including graduate training schemes
    • Continuing existing employment
    • Move on to further postgraduate study
    • Explore teacher training options such as PGCE.
